Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has written a letter to the wife of the patient who died in Chandigarh on Tuesday, expressing his personal regret.

The patient's family has alleged that the Prime Minister's visit to Chandigarh caused his death, but hospital authorities claim that's not true.

Sumit Prakash Verma was being taken by ambulance to the hospital at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research or PGIMER. The Prime Minister was attending a function here, and Varma's family accused the PM's security of holding up their ambulance for an hour. Varma's wife insisted that he was alive when they arrived at the hospital.

However, a spokesperson for the hospital (the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research or PGIMER) had denied this on Tuesday.
