Toss New Zealand opted to bat v India
New Zealand's attempt to stay alive in this short four-game tournament began in the best possible way at the R Premadasa Stadium: Daniel Vettori won the toss and decided to bat. Vettori didn't think the toss would dictate this game but the batsmen need to vindicate his decision by putting up a fighting total against an Indian side missing Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag.
New Zealand made two changes. Kyle Mills, who was under the weather before the last game, took Daryl Tuffey's place. It was a harsh call, given how well Tuffey bowled and that Ian Butler's poor bowling in the batting Powerplay had hurt New Zealand. Nathan McCullum was the other change, replaced by Neil Broom.
India, as MS Dhoni had suggested, went in with a 3-1 combination. Harbhajan Singh filled the specialist spinner's spot, and Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, and RP Singh were the three fast bowlers.
