Broad rips Aussies to shreds

Aug 21 2009 -

Stuart Broad's stunning 5-37 has put Australia in all sorts of trouble at 133-8 at tea on day two of Ashes series decider.

The Nottinghamshire seamer has ripped the Australian batting order to shreds with a devastating spell of bowling at The Oval to put his side in the driving seat in a match they need to win to reclaim the Ashes.

Having been bowled out quickly for 332 early in the morning session, it was Australia who seemed to have the upper hand in an intriguing match.

But when Broad snared opener Shane Watson lbw and then took the prize scalp of captain Ricky Ponting for just eight runs, the momentum started to shift back in England's direction.

Michael Hussey (0) was next to fall to a buoyant Broad when he was adjudged to be out lbw to continue his miserable series.

The packed house at The Oval were then left rubbing their eyes in disbelief when Jonathan Trott plucked a drive from the dangerous Michael Clarke (3) out of the air at extra cover to give Broad his fourth wicket.

Graeme Swann came on at the other end and immediately took advantage of turning conditions.

Marcus North (8) was given out lbw to the jubilant off-spinner despite replays suggesting there was a heavy inside edge.

Simon Katich was the only batsman to provide resistance, but any thoughts he had of kicking on from a belligerent 50 were ended when he edged onto his pads and the ball ballooned up to Alastair Cook for a simple catch.

Not to be outdone, Broad claimed his fifth wicket when he clean bowled Brad Haddin (1) with a peach of a yorking delivery.

Swann then ensured England headed in for tea with the tails up when Mitchell Johnson was caught behind by Matt Prior for 11.

Australia are trailing England's first-innings by a massive 199 runs with just two wicket remaining.
