The same applies for anything of a perverse or sexual nature. Other people may do horrible things, but why do I want to put those ideas in my mind? While a naive flight attendant of 22, I happened to see a postcard of a perverse sexual nature on a street corner in Athens, Greece. It was in one of those turn-racks, right next to the picture of a sunset over the Parthenon that read "Wish you were here". That image is now burned into my brain and pops up at the worst times. Before that, I hadn't even imagined such aberrant things were possible. I'll remember that image until the day I die. Is it possible to be too sensitive in this area? I don't think so. Every act starts in the mind. Who knows where one step will lead?
Anyway, while at the library with my girls the other day, I walked by the shelves in the teen section and one book in particular caught my eye. It was obviously new and expensive. On the cover of the thick, glossy book jacket was a photo of a pretty little girl's dress made of white silk strewn with tiny pink roses. I was intrigued by the photo and by the title, "Living Dead Girl". The back breifly mentioned that it was an abduction story. I like mystery, especially if there's a happy ending as the pretty cover seemed to indicate, so while my girl's were in the children's section, I sat down and started to read the first few pages.
I wish I hadn't.
It was an abduction story, all right. Told from the first person perspective of a 15 year old girl who'd been abducted at ten and kept as a sexual slave by her captor. It wasn't a fantasy, like a vampire novel, or a Harry Potter tome. It was reality. It was told in great detail. Told graphically. There were things in those first five pages that will haunt me the rest of my life, details you would never hear about on the news or even said outloud on the street. Those pages deeply depressed me to the point that I walked around distracted and on the verge of tears for a few days. I tried to stop replaying it in my head. I begged God to let me stop thinking about it, and the worst part of it is that this book was in our public library that our tax dollars are paying for and was in the TEEN SECTION.
I admit that I'm a little naive, especially for a forty year old woman. But I don't think I'm a prude, nor am I am I legalistic in any way. I may not agree with what an adult chooses to read or fill their heads with, but I don't have the right to tell an adult what to do (unless they are a serial killer. :-) Then I might tell them to stop killing people!) But it scares me to death to think an unsuspecting young mind could innocently pick up that book and have pictures of these sexual horrors in their heads. And even scarier is that someone made the decision that this was suitable reading for teenagers. If someone is caught doing the things that were done in this book, we call them a monster, more animal than human, someone without a conscience. But reading about them being done to a child is OK. And hey, it's enlightening for young minds to be exposed to all sorts of things, right? I pray every day for the Lord's protection to be around my childrens' thoughts.
He begins, Repentance is not easy or painless or convenient. It is a bitter cup from Hell. But only Satan, who dwells there, would have you think that a necessary and required acknowledgment is more distasteful than permanent residence. Only he would say, “You can’t change. You won’t change. It’s too long and too hard to change. Give up. Give in. Don’t repent. You are just the way you are.” That, my friends, is a lie born of desperation. Don’t fall for it.
As you know, the Brethren used to announce in general conference the names of those who had been called on missions. Not only was this the way friends and neighbors learned of the call, more often than not it was the way the missionary learned of it as well. One such prospect was Eli H. Pierce. A railroad man by trade, he had not been very faithful in Church meetings—“even had my inclinations led in that direction, which I frankly confess they did not,” he admitted. His mind had been given totally to what he demurely calls “temporalities.” He said he had never read more than a few pages of scripture in his life and that he had spoken to only one public gathering (an effort which he says was no credit to himself or those who heard him). He used the vernacular of the railroad and the barroom with a finesse born of long practice. He bought cigars wholesale—a thousand at a time—and he regularly lost his paycheck playing pool. Then this classic understatement: “Nature never endowed me with a superabundance of religious sentiment; my spirituality was not high and probably even a little below average.”
Well, the Lord knew what Eli Pierce was, and he knew something else. He knew what I’m pleading for today. He knew what Eli Pierce could become. When the call came that October 5 in 1875, Eli wasn’t even in the Tabernacle. He was out working on one of the railroad lines. A fellow employee, once recovered from the shock of it all, ran out to telegraph the startling news. Brother Pierce writes, “At the very moment this intelligence was being flashed over the wires, I was sitting lazily thrown back in an office rocking chair, my feet on the desk, reading a novel and simultaneously sucking on an old Dutch pipe just to vary the monotony of cigar smoking.”
He goes on. “As soon as I had been informed of what had taken place, I threw the novel in the waste basket, the pipe in a corner [and have never touched either to this hour]. I sent in my resignation . . . to take effect at once, in order that I might have time for study and preparation. I then started into town to buy [scripture].”
Then these stirring words:
Remarkable as it may seem, and has since appeared to me, a thought of disregarding the call, or of refusing to comply with the requirement, never once entered my mind. The only question I asked—and I asked it a thousand times—was: “How can I accomplish this mission? How can I, who am so shamefully ignorant and untaught in doctrine, do honor to God and justice to the souls of men, and merit the trust reposed in me by the Priesthood?”
With such genuine humility fostering resolution rather than defeating it, Eli Pierce fulfilled a remarkable mission. His journal could appropriately close on a completely renovated life with this one line: “Throughout our entire mission we were greatly blessed.” But I add one experience to make the point.
During his missionary service, Brother Pierce was called in to administer to the infant child of a branch president whom he knew and loved. Unfortunately, the wife of the branch president had become embittered and now seriously objected to any religious activity within the home, including a blessing for this dying child. With the mother refusing to leave the bedside and the child too ill to move, this humble branch president with his missionary friend retired to a small upper room in the house to pray for the baby’s life. The mother, suspecting just such an act, sent one of the older children to observe and report back.
There in that secluded chamber the two knelt and prayed fervently until, in Brother Pierce’s own words, “we felt that the child would live and knew that our prayers had been heard.” Arising from their knees, they turned slowly only to see the young girl standing in the partially open doorway gazing intently into the room. She seemed, however, quite oblivious to the movements of the two men. She stood entranced for some seconds, her eyes immovable. Then she said, “Papa, who was that . . . man in there?”
Her father said, “That is Brother Pierce. You know him.”
“No,” she said, matter-of-factly, “I mean the other man.”
“There was no other, darling, except Brother Pierce and myself. We were praying for baby.”
“Oh, there was another man,” the child insisted, “for I saw him standing [above] you and Brother Pierce and he was dressed [all] in white.”
Now if God in his heavens will do that for a repentant old cigar-smoking, inactive, swearing pool player, don’t you think he’ll do it for you? He will if your resolve is as deep and permanent as Eli Pierce’s. In this Church we ask for faith, not infallibility. (See Biography and Family Record of Lorenzo Snow, pp. 407–13.)
“Through the ages , some persons without spiritual understanding, have tried to explain our existence by pretentious words such as ex nihilo (out of nothing). Others have deduced that, because of certain similarities between different forms of life, there has been a natural selection of the species, or organic revolution from one form to another. Still others have concluded that man came as a consequence of a “big bang”, which resulted in the creation of our planet and life upon it.
Top me, such theories are unbelievable. Could an explosion in a printing shop produce a dictionary? It is unthinkable! One might argue that it is within the realm of possibility, but even if that could happen, such a dictionary would certainly not heal its own torn pages, renew its own worn out corners or reproduce its own subsequent editions.
As you know, I've been bunking up with friends all summer but as of September 1st Austin & I will be moving into our new abode! We are incredibly excited to announce that we will be living in the BiRDHOUSE - one of Austin's latest & greatest independent art galleries. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters Applauds Rep. McCotter’s ‘HAPPY’ Bill
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. – The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS), the nation’s leading nonprofit professional pet sitting organization, applauds Congressman Thaddeus McCotter’s efforts to pass a bill to make pet care expenses tax-deductible.
Introduced on July 31, HR 3501, commonly referred to as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years or HAPPY Act, would amend the IRS code to allow an individual to deduct up to $3500 in a taxable year for qualified pet care expenses. The bill defines qualified as “amounts paid in connection with providing care (including veterinary care) for a qualified pet expense other than any expense in connection with the acquisition of the qualified pet.”
The bill further defines a qualified pet as a “legally owned, domesticated, live animal” and does not include animals used for research or owned or used in conjunction with trade or business.
“This bill will provide pet owners the opportunity to deduct pet care expenses ensuring adequate veterinary care for their pets,” said NAPPS President Monica Leighton, owner of Professional Pet Sitting in Venice, Fla. “During these hard economic times, this legislation is essential because it encourages responsible pet ownership and will potentially reduce the number of pets that are abandoned due to the lack of resources. We encourage all animal lovers to contact their members of Congress and voice their support for HR 3501.”
The bill, which has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee, can be viewed at http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.3501.IH.
NAPPS is dedicated to promoting the welfare of animals. The Association aims to help the pet owning public by fulfilling its vision statement, “To be the most respected authority in professional pet sitting.” It does so by providing the tools and support to foster the success of its members. Additionally, pet owners can benefit from NAPPS’ free resources including a disaster preparedness guide, tips on how to select a pet sitter, nationwide referral service, and quarterly teleconferences aimed to educate the pet owning public.

150 Dogs Begin New Lives Following Puppy Mill Rescue
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (Monday, Aug. 24 , 2009)—Approximately 150 cast-off puppy mill dogs from a number of Midwest states are safe today after being delivered to local rescue groups in the New York area. After thorough medical evaluations, much-needed grooming, and a lot of TLC, they eventually will be available for adoption through local rescue groups.
After a long, cross-country journey, they were delivered this morning to waiting groups here at North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington by Best Friends Animal Society, which arranged for the release and provided transport of the dogs. In addition to North Shore Animal League, three other animal welfare organizations—Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Wainscott, N.Y.; Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, East Hanover, N.J.; and Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association, Ledgewood, N.J.—will provide homes for the dogs until they are adopted.
The rescued dogs included adults used for breeding, adolescents and puppies of various breeds, such as cocker spaniels, Yorkies, Maltese, poodles, Pomeranians, shih tzus, shelties and Jack Russell terriers. Dogs such as these are typically killed or sold at mill dog auctions for as little as 25 cents because they are considered unsalable. Instead, they will get a new chance for happy lives.
Joanne Yohannan, senior vice president of operations for North Shore Animal League America, said the rescued animals would be given time to settle in, and will be fed and hydrated after their long journey.
“We first must get the dogs feeling safe and comfortable in their new environment,” Ms. Yohannan said. “Then our staff experts will begin the process of evaluating each animal. These dogs will experience the nurturing and warmth of human contact that they have been deprived of all their lives, which will prepare them for adoption into the loving homes they deserve.
“Rather than being needlessly killed because they were no longer wanted by their breeders, some beautiful dogs are about to begin a new and exciting phase of their lives,” said Kelli Ohrtman, campaign specialist for Best Friends Animal Society, which funded the rescue of the dogs to the New York area through its “Pup My Ride” transportation program.
The rescue and transport of the dogs are part of Best Friends Animal Society’s “Puppies Aren’t Products” national campaign (puppiesarentproducts.com), which also targets the retail end of the puppy mill industry through informational demonstrations at New York puppy emporiums. Since 2008, the peaceful pet store demonstrations have caused some stores to only offer for sale pets that come from rescue groups and shelters.
“Puppy mill dogs comprise a significant percentage of the 4-5 million pets that die in American shelters annually”, said Ohrtman. “The mission of Best Friends Animal Society is to bring about a time when there are no more homeless pets. It’s what the public wants and the pet trade industry must change dramatically or it will become a relic of the past.”
Ms. Yohannan said that the Animal League will announce later in the week when the animals will be available for adoption and advised interested individuals to visit the Animal League website, www.AnimalLeague.org for details.
“Once our staff experts have determined that the dogs are ready for adoption, we will be eager to find the perfect homes for each and every one of these wonderful dogs,” said Ms. Yohannan.

Sometimes he has issues with wiping his cute little butt. The other day he shouted "mummy, can you wipe my bottom'. Off I trot into the bathroom, he bent over and I noticed there was a brown substance on the top of his foot. "Charlie, is that poop on your foot?" "Huh" he said. I repeated myself, "Charlie is that poop" pointing to his foot. He opened his hand and I could see poop on his hand and he said matter of factly "Yeah".
"How did you get poop on your foot?"
"It jumped out of the toilet at me".
I know what you are thinking, how the heck did poop jump out of the toilet, well that is the mystery. How did it get back in the toilet, I am assuming by the poop on his hand he picked it up and put it back in. LOVELY! Future wives of Charlie this is a great story I will be giving his best man, Charlie and the jumping poop, it brings a whole new meaning to Charlie and the Chocolate factory!
