New Delhi: The disappointment of the loss in Vadodara was buried in Nagpur on Wednesday. India bounced back in the seven-ODI series against Australia with a thumping 99-run victory.

Speaking to CNN-IBN, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar praised the Indian batsmen for piling up a huge total but reserved special praise for captain MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir.

"He shaped his innings wonderfully," Gavaskar said. "A little bit of steadiness was required when he came in, and he did very well to build a partnership with Gambhir. After that he started to open his shoulders and go for the big shots.

"It was one of the most well-compiled one-day hundreds you'll see," he added. "It was reminiscent of the way Kapil Dev got that 175 in the 1983 World Cup. Dhoni can bat in a similar manner."

There were question marks over MS Dhoni being burdened with captaincy because of a change in his approach, from being a mighty hitter of the cricket ball to a run accumulator.

"He is playing according to the requirement of the situation," he said. "The best part about his batting is that he keeps the strike rotating with ones and twos to put pressure on the fielders."

Statistical comparisons with Adam Gilchrist suggest Dhoni is on par with the former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman with a higher batting average, and Gavaskar predicts a great future for the Indian captain.

"He he has got plenty of years ahead of him," he said. "It will be very difficult to overhaul Sachin Tendulkar. But in Tendulkar and Dhoni, India will have two of the greatest one-day cricketers the world has seen."

Gavaskar was also impressed with Gautam Gambhir's batting form, saying that the left-hander manages to bring the best out of himself in big matches.

"Gambhir raises his game when it comes to playing the best teams in the world," he said. He has been very consistent, although he unfortunate to miss out on a hundred. It is noticeable that Gambhir's form has always rubbed off on an overall Indian performance. When Gambhir hasn't done well, India haven't done too well either."

Also praising other batsmen in the team like Suresh Raina, Gavaskar didn't find any problem with the on-field duel between Sehwag and Johnson and then Dhoni and Johnson. "Banter is all right. As long as there is no abuse on the field, it's okay."

With the third ODI to be played in Delhi on Saturday, Gavaskar predicted that it would be a low-scoring affair.

"I don't know what the pitch is going to be like in Delhi," he said. "It was very slow during the Champions League a couple of weeks ago. But the curator would have had some time to prepare the pitch. But I still think the spinners could dominate, and it will be low-scoring. Hopefully the pitch has improved."
