Boops and Brains

Sometimes, I am surprised by how smart kids are; I shouldn't be, but I am. For example: Nikki Dee, who is still several months away from her third birthday, has surprised me twice recently, basically over the same meal served several days apart.

I had prepared tuna casserole when she visited last week. I thought it seemed like a good idea because she loves it, but then I thought again and realized that she actually loves her mother's version. Knowing that my recipe was different, I was fearful that if we called it tuna casserole, she might be dismayed by the different taste of my rendition of this standby recipe. Therefore, because I am exceedingly clever, I decided to tell her that the dish was called noodle boops. In the event, however, she took one look at the dish and declared that it was tuna casserole, and no amount of proclamation on our parts could shake her conviction.

As it turned out, she didn't like my dish no matter what we called it: I think because it contains crunchy celery and pepper as opposed to her mother's mushy peas.

Yesterday, when she visited once again, we had enough leftovers to try the dish one more time. Once again, she surprised me by declaring at the get go that she didn't want any boops. Why she would recall that name, when she had originally insisted that it had been tuna casserole and not boops, is beyond me. But it does give one pause to realize just how much kids absorb and retain. Whatever her name, she wanted nothing to do with those cursed boops even though we had thought to remove the crunchy bits. Fortunately, after much futile cajoling, we were able to sneak a bit into her open mouth, and as she chewed she figured the boops were now okay and happily consumed the rest of the dish.

The point, however, is my surprise at what she is able to absorb and retain at her tender age, and I think that I had best be careful about what I say from now on. After four decades of sailing The Seven Seas under The Jolly Roger, it will be difficult for me to give up my sailorish manner of speech, but I guess I'll have to try.

But I'm not.

All thanks to a few unwise choices I made in who to call after 2pm. Wtf.

I got a missed call from my dad so I called him back.

My dad canceled my birthday dinner a few hours to go saying that he had to attend another dinner.
And when I heard what the dinner was for I was seriously, fuck you.

I didn't say that to him, but he could tell I was literally fuming.
He kept on saying that don't worry he come back from overseas ( He was flying off tomorrow), he will give me my allowance.

Wtf. Who cares about the allowance at this point.
Are all men DAFT, don't they actually know what the problem is?

And speaking about allowance, all the mofos who KP me asking me why the hell I still work, nah! You better burn and swallow this portion of information.

I put down the phone and called my bro to call him up instead to tell him I won't be going.

First mistake was to call someone.
What a fucking big mistake, I should have learned from all the past experiences that he/she was never one to be good with anything interpersonal and has close to zero PR skills.

We should make PR a core subject in O levels.

You busy, never mind, say in a PROPER way can a not.
At least ACT INTERESTED or show the LEAST BIT OF CONCERN when people suddenly so emomomo can a not.

Oh , I forgot.
You cannot.

2nd biggest mistake of my life today was to call up the 2nd person to complain.

Me: Wah lau! Very angry leh! How can he like that!

#2: Aiyah, you should go do some exercise. Why you want to keep on eating the dinner he going to treat for what? Didn't your cousins bring you go eat dinner already? Why you so gian the free dinner? You should go exercise get rid of the fats and avoid illnesses.

SUPER MAJORLY WTF.
Who the fuck cares about the free dinner?

I couldn't take it anymore after that. I was just overly eager to put down the phone on 2nd person already.

Luckily, again, out of no where, a hero appeared to save the day. I was texting hero due to hero's birthday wishes and we were catching up a bit and hero heard about my sad plight and out of nowhere just asked me out even though I know hero had a long night.

Hero had minimal sleep and accompanied me to watch a movie and treated me to McDonald's afterward, very simple but I was very happy.

I wasn't alone on my actual day and someone bother and cared enough to make sure I wasn't unhappy or just listened to my grousings.

I received several awesome messages from awesome friends as well.

So I guess I really should be smiling.
But why do I still feel so urgh.

Anyhow, will update about other awesome things, as soon as all pictures are in ;] Good night sweethearts I just wanted to rant.
It's no secret to anyone following this blog or New York Tails Magazine that this had been the winter of discontent as voiced by a wide variety of animal advocates and adoption groups when it comes to New York City Animal Care and Control (ACC) up to and including the decision not to renew former ACC director Charle Pedrole's contract in October 2009 after what some characterized as a tumultuous two-year tenure.

However, New York Tails Magazine has learned from a number of credible sources that there may be a full-scale mutiny afoot at Animal Care and Control, with some calling for a complete break between NYC Department of Health and Animal Care and Control. Currently, the Department of Health is the oversight agency for ACC.

On January 28th, select members of the animal adoption community were invited by 'executive members' of a group calling itself "The Shelter Reform Action Committee" (SRAC) to a meeting attended by Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals President Jane Hoffman, interim ACC executive director Risa Weinstock, ACC administrative director Richard Gentles, and NYCACC medical director Stephanie Janezcko. The meeting was also attended, interestingly, by NYS Assembly Rep. Micah Kellner. (There had been anticipation that the new ACC director would be named at the meeting but this did not happen.)

"It's Not that The Department of Health is Evil, But..."

In the opening statement delivered at the Jan. 28th meeting, SRAC co-chairs Jennifer Panton and Ester Koslow said it was time for Animal Care and Control to sever ties with the New York City Department of Health, the oversight agency of ACC. Ms. Panton was the former head of ACC's 'New Hope" program and is currently head of United Action for Animals. Ms. Koslow, like several others now involved with the SRAC board, is a former volunteer at AC&C.

While being careful to say that SRAC was not asking Ms. Hoffman or Ms. Weinstock to express an opinion on the ideas presented at the meeting, they did not mince words when it came to pointing the finger at what they sees as NYC DoH's failures insofar as the animals of the city.

"It's not that the Department of Health is some evil government agency," Ms. Panton said. "It's just that it is the wrong agency for the AC&C." The primary goal of the NYC DoH is to protect the health of the people of the city, she said, and not animals. "To the Department of Health, when it's a toss up between people and animals, people will always win. And therein lies the basic conflict of interest preventing the Department of Health from serving the interests of companion animals."

It's worth noting that SRAC is not a new idea and has a long and rather complex history starting with a parting of the ways between the ASPCA and the Mayor Rudolf Giuliani's administration. Neither is the charge of the NYC DoH falling short when it comes to doing more to get animals from the shelters adopted a new one, as an ongoing lawsuit from the private shelter Stray from the Heart against the DoH attests.

But perhaps what is most telling is the timing of the January 28th meeting and those in attendance from 'both side of the aisle', to borrow a phrase from politics. And politics (and the division of resources) certainly would appear to have a role to play in the ACC's potential secession from the DoH.

More detailed information, including background information, can be found on the SRAC website, which promises to post a transcript of the January 28th meeting shortly.

As always, there are two sides to every story, and both this blog and New York Tails Magazine promise to do our best to deliver them in a fair and balanced manner. We've asked the Department of Health for a comment on these latest developments and will keep you updated if there is a response.

Hi my friends,

thanks for writing me such kind comments and compliments on my blog. You brighten up my day - because it's dark and rainy here in Florida where I'm sitting just now. And more rain is predicted for in the later afternoon. Anyway, one day... the sun will be back for sure, it's the Sunshine State and the name only is promise enough, right? :)

Let the sunshine in - and see you tomorrow again.

Susanne

Here's a question for you.

If you saw an electrical appliance....let's say it was a hairdryer.......whose plug looked like this:

.....and you had just finished washing your hair, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that your hands may be slightly wet.........would you blithely pick it up and plug it in?

a) Yes

or

b) No

You know what's coming don't you?

The Singer answered 'A'. Then there was a bit of a squeal.......

Anyway, amid shouts of 'Oh dear God' and 'Run it under the tap!' the Father of This Lot was summoned from the Mare and Foal to unplug the offending item. There followed the usual diatribe of '....don't know what sort of kids you're bringing up here....' and the various other pearls of wisdom in much the same vein which he airs on every conceivable occasion. The hairdryer was duly fixed and the Father of This Lot was waved off at the door before he could cause any further verbal damage.

Personally, I keep well away from hairdryers. I never got over that business with Valerie Barlow. It left a mark on my childhood psyche which remains to this day.

Anyway, thankfully, The Singer appears none the worse for her adventure apart from the tiniest little blister on her thumb.

Well I think it's tiny. She's carrying on as though it was a third degree burn.

Someone remarked to me this morning after Mass that she had been 'very lucky'.

Huh.

Luck doesn't come into it, mate.

With this lot, I find that being on your knees for upwards of sixteen hours a day invoking the protection of the Almighty is the key. And that's the method I intend to stick with.

And since she does seem to have escaped unharmed and is back to her usual hair-tossing self, I just couldn't resist this witty little graphic........
