I have finally decided, this year, no matter how much I love the Midwest and am a Midwestern girl at heart, I am sick of winter before it's over.
I'm really fine with the change in weather, from the end of November, some snow in December and even through half of January. But after two months of it, I give up. I am officially tired of winter and wish it was warming up already for spring. I am praying that the groundhog does not see that shadow. However, whether spring comes in four weeks or six weeks is not soon enough for me. It needs to come tomorrow!
I like the fact that I live in a four season region of the United States. I love the earthy warm dirt smell spring time has, as the rains come down and the tulips and the lilacs fragrance the air. (Sidebar: I used to hate Lilac Time where my husband used to work, because we didn't see him for 14 days straight as he dealt with his role in all the festivities) Now I really enjoy that time of year.
I love the heat of the summer, going to the pool in the evening with the kids, riding bikes in the cooler evening. Of course I could leave the high heat and humidity, but it wasn't so bad here last summer.
My favorite season is fall. I had hoped to have a fall wedding or a fall baby, so there would be even more reason to celebrate, but I just celebrate by buying fall tablecloths and towels and enjoying the reds, golds, oranges and browns of the leaves. The days can still be warm, but the nights are cool and you can sense the change in the air.
Even winter is good for a bit, with the super white snow and the perfect snowflake crystals you can catch every once in a while. The sparkle of sunshine across new fallen snow. The fun of rolling in the packable snow great for snowmen.
Then the snow gets dirty and ugly. All the trash pushed by snowplows and blown around starts to get uncovered. The grassy patches are muddy and brown, and the skies are gray, gray, gray.
And here we sit and I am begging for warm weather, blue skies, and green grass again. Come on Punxsutawney Phil, don't let us down!

I heard a piece today on NPR about a scientific study, which found that time does actually seem to move faster as we age-- as our brains slow down, which sadly, they do with each passing year, time seems to speed up all around us. While this wasn't a very reassuring finding to someone creeping nearer to 40 every day, I had no problem believing it to be true. My slowing brain is finding it difficult to conceive that three years have passed since we went from being an all-boy family to one that included our sweet Bronwen.
Here's a brief glance at her birthdays so far. The next one is just around the corner at the rate we're going. But it will seem like an eternity to her.

I don't know what this young lady was looking for, but it was funlooking at her and the play of the waves

I shudder to think what this title is going to do to my Google ads, but I will plough on regardless.
One of the only downsides to getting your body back to normal after having a baby, is getting back to flying the red flag once a month. Now you know you have married the right man when he calls you from Costco and you can ask him to buy you a jumbo pack of tampons and he doesn't run screaming with embarrassment - although I do have to call them 'corks' so's not to injure his man-ears.
For some reason in the States it is almost impossible to buy a tampon without an applicator. I'm sure some of you readers are falling off your chairs in shock at the thought of how else do I get it up there, *shudder*? Even in these eco-friendly times it is harder to find an applicator-free tampon than it is to find a Californian without a flip-flop tan. Carrying around an arsenal of torpedoes instead of a tiny and discreet Lilette is something I have learned to live with. What I was not prepared for was LK coming back with 96 scented tampons.
WTF?
Turning a blind eye to the fact that he might have been trying to tell me something, I ask you, scented tampons - really? Are people that squeamish about periods that they think they have to deodorize themselves? The idea of putting chemical anything up there is abhorrent. Are people really so repelled? I wonder if it's an American thing - hairlessness, multiple showers, body deodorant, feminine wipes, I think they've reached the zenith of sanitization over here.
In LK's defence, I'm sure he was just grabbing the first appropriately titled product in the entire embarrassing aisle - but I've never seen these before. Are they new? Are they in the UK? Are they going to be returned to Costco? Oh yes.

Christine,I'm sending you some more pictures of my kitchen that you posted on your blog under "The Good Triangle" dated October 2nd.

I liked your idea of having the range on one wall and keeping it pretty. I understand the triangle, but with your suggestions it doesn't seem feasible because of the size of the room. I attached some measurements to get more of your input.
I also attached a picture of a plan that Lowe's came up with.
My two ideas I'm considering is:
1) The plan that Lowe's came up with, which is a peninsula island.
2) The second idea would to be having a floating island instead of the peninsula.
As you can see, the kitchen is small and challenging......which is why I'm still up in the air with things.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
Dear Elizabeth,
Is Lowe's plan alright- yes. It is perfectly fine. However if I could have just the stove and not the refrigerator on the stove wall- I would try for that. The prettier we can make the focal point wall in the kitchen- the better. I found a nice focal point kitchen for you in Veranda- at the top of the post. Now imagine a refrigerator right by the cooktop...
It also makes a better working triangle to not have the stove and refrigerator on the same plane- as it separates your work areas- giving you more space around them. In your case it gives you more counter space near your cooktop. This is even more of an issue if your kitchen is likely to have more than one person using it at a time.
With the floorplan that you e-mailed me (thanks- I love having measurements)- I drew an idea for you. Having the peninsula come out from the other side is another option. Your window there would require you to lower the height of the counter surface- and the width of the room would require you to have it be a shallow area- unconventional- yes- but what a great place to have a cookbook shelves mixed with display of serving pieces. You could also add a couple of baskets to store napkins- etc. I also added some floating shelves on the right hand side for more storage and display.
